John Cockerill and ArcelorMittal developed Volteron, an electrochemical ironmaking process using renewable electricity at low temperatures. It produces high-purity iron plates with zero CO₂ emissions. An industrial plant is targeted for 2027. The process builds on the EU-funded SIDERWIN project with pilot validation in 2025
