Mizushima's Molecular Makeover: JFE's Carbon Conversion Coup

JFE Steel has started turning waste gas from its steel plant into chemicals. The project began in September 2026 at the Mizushima Complex in Okayama, Japan. JFE sends by-product gas to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, which converts it into methanol at a new demonstration plant. Mitsubishi Chemical then turns the methanol into propylene, a key ingredient for plastics. The three companies will study whether the process can make money & work reliably. They also hope to bring other factories in the complex into the scheme.
