India's small and medium stainless steel makers are calling on the government to restore mandatory quality controls on imports. They say a surge of cheap, substandard Chinese stainless steel has pushed factory utilization down to as low as forty percent. China makes around sixty percent of the world's stainless steel and has been redirecting exports to India after facing trade barriers in the United States and Europe. Producers want the Bureau of Indian Standards to enforce quality certification on all imports, arguing it protects consumers and creates a fair market for compliant manufacturers.
