BCCL's Bold Bequest: JSW Steel's Judicious, Jubilant Washery Win
India's state-owned coal company BCCL hands over its coal washery operations to JSW Steel under a government asset monetization plan. The deal gives JSW Steel direct control over a key step in the coking coal supply chain for its blast furnaces. India currently imports fifty-five to sixty million metric tons of coking coal every year despite having large domestic reserves. Better-managed washeries could improve coal quality, cut costs, and reduce India's costly dependence on imported coking coal.
