Voltaic Vanguard: Electrifying Steel's Sclerotic Supply Chain

A new report from the Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis says the steel industry must electrify far more of its operations. Electricity provides less than 12% of the sector's energy today. Most energy goes to heat above 1,000°C, which is hard to supply electrically. The report says hydrogen should be used to reduce iron ore, not to make heat, where direct electricity is more efficient. It also warns that industry will get under 3% of global electrification investment by 2035 & calls for stronger policy support before COP31 in Türkiye.
