Gerdau, Latin America's biggest steel producer, is taking full control of a hydroelectric plant in Brazil previously shared with energy utility Copel. The move gives Gerdau its own clean, renewable power source for its electric arc furnace steel mills. Hydroelectric power produces no direct carbon emissions, helping Gerdau cut the carbon footprint of its steel to well below industry averages. The acquisition strengthens Gerdau's long-term energy security and its credentials as a producer of low-carbon steel.
