Hydrogen's Hallowed Hegemony & Green Steel's Grand Gambit

France Hydrogène is urging the European Union to define automotive green steel as steel made via hydrogen-based direct reduced iron technology, setting a strict emissions limit of 0.7 metric tons of CO₂ per metric ton of hot-rolled coil. The association wants the automotive steel flexibility mechanism maintained at 7% and the pilot market launched in 2030. Green hydrogen currently costs around €7 per kilogram, far above the €2 target needed for viable steel production, making regulatory demand signals critical to unlocking investment.
