Fortescue achieved a transformative milestone by delivering its inaugural large-scale Battery Energy Storage System to North Star Junction in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The installation comprises 48 containerized units using BYD's Blade Battery technology, providing 250 megawatt-hours capacity capable of delivering 50 megawatts for five hours. This system stores daytime solar generation for nighttime discharge, progressively eliminating diesel & natural gas consumption across mining operations. The deployment represents the first phase of a planned 4-5 gigawatt-hour battery storage rollout supporting Fortescue's ambitious 2030 decarbonisation targets for iron ore operations.
