Carbon's Crusaders Clamour for Credible Climate Commitments
Six major European steelmakers jointly call on EU institutions to preserve the Emissions Trading Scheme and strengthen the Cross-Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism. The group, which includes Outokumpu, SSAB, and Salzgitter, collectively invests over ten billion euros in low-emission steel production. They warn that weakening carbon pricing will penalise early investors and delay Europe's green industrial transition. The producers also urge the EU to close loopholes in the carbon border mechanism by covering steel-intensive processed products and preventing circumvention.
