Šefčovič's Shrewd Schema: EU's Steel Sovereignty Stratagem

The European Commission has published its new steel import quota framework, replacing the previous safeguard measure from July 2026. The total annual quota stands at 18.3 million metric tons, split equally between free trade agreement partners and all other countries. Turkey receives the largest hot-rolled coil allocation at over 642,000 metric tons per year, while India, Vietnam, and South Korea also secure major volumes. The regulation is initially valid until end-2026 and will undergo a full review under standard procedures before year-end.
