Steel Credits for Tailpipe Targets: Europe's Carmakers Get a Softer 2035 & Its Steelmakers Get a Market

The European Parliament's three largest groups have agreed to cut the 2035 CO₂ target for new cars from 100% to 87.5%, alongside a credit allowing carmakers to meet 3 points of their obligation, rising to 7.5 from 2035, through low-carbon steel melted & poured in the EU. The steel industry hails the measure as the market its 60-plus decarbonisation projects have lacked, given that steel is nearly half a car's mass & up to a quarter of its production emissions, & demands the credit stay steel-specific alongside a strict Made in the EU rule. Climate analysts see a tailpipe standard weakened under an industrial-policy banner; a parliamentary vote, Council negotiations & the legal definition of low-carbon steel will decide the outcome .
