China's Carbon Conundrum: Colossal Climatic Contradiction

Chinese steel enterprises increased total emissions by 7.1% year-over-year in November 2025 despite 4.5% energy consumption declines, according to China Iron & Steel Association data. The paradoxical pattern reflects increased blast furnace utilization over electric arc furnaces, where carbon-intensive production routes generated higher CO₂ emissions despite improved efficiency. Specific pollutants declined substantially, including 13.9% sulfur dioxide reduction, 18.2% nitrogen oxide decrease, & 4.5% particulate matter decline. Clean energy production surged 77.9% year-over-year, including 584% wind energy growth & 76.8% solar increase. Resource recovery remained impressive, exceeding 98% utilization for slag & combustible gases, though water consumption per ton increased 10.6% & wastewater emissions rose 17.4%.
