CBAM's Crushing Calculus: India's SMEs Seek Salvation & Structural Support

India's small & medium-sized steel & aluminium exporters face a severe challenge from the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, now fully in force since January 2026. Experts from The Energy & Resources Institute & the PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry call for urgent government action, including a domestic carbon tax, data collection systems, & mutual recognition arrangements. Around two-thirds of India's steel exports previously went to Europe. Producers are now pivoting toward Africa & other alternative markets to offset lost European competitiveness.
