BHP & Hatch are designing an Electric Smelting Furnace pilot plant to cut steel emissions by 80%. The DRI-ESF pathway uses Pilbara iron ore, renewables, & hydrogen. The NeoSmelt consortium, including BlueScope & Rio Tinto, plans a 30,000-40,000 metric ton pilot in Kwinana, targeting 2028 operations.
