Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel launched China's first million-tonne near-zero-carbon steel production facility in Guangdong province on December 23. The installation integrates hydrogen-based shaft furnace technology alongside electric arc furnace operations, producing 1.8 million metric tons annually of zero-carbon materials. The facility achieves 50-80% emission reductions compared to conventional production, eliminating over 3.14 million metric tons of CO₂ yearly. The $641.34 million investment demonstrates commercial viability of hydrogen metallurgy for premium flat steel products.
