ArcelorMittal's Audacious Amperage Ascent in Belgium

ArcelorMittal Belgium has begun constructing the Baekeland high-voltage substation, a crucial infrastructure project enabling electric steelmaking & low-carbon production. The facility will connect directly to Belgium's 380 kV transmission grid through an agreement alongside operator Elia, becoming the first industrial direct connection from 2030 onwards. The substation will transform high-voltage electricity into levels suitable for electric arc furnace operations, substantially reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace steelmaking while strengthening regional electrical infrastructure serving the port area & surrounding industrial sites.
