Algoma's Audacious Arc: Steelmaking's Sustainable Shift

Algoma Steel secured C$420 million ($310 million) in Canadian government funding in July 2021 to transform from blast furnace to electric arc furnace technology. The C$700 million ($517 million) project will achieve 70% CO₂ emissions reduction, eliminating 3 million metric tons annually. Construction commenced in 2022 possessing commissioning scheduled for 2024. The facility will possess 3.7 million short tons annual capacity utilizing two 250 metric ton Danieli electric arc furnaces. Italian technology provider Danieli supplied Digimelter technology alongside Q-One digital power systems. General Electric upgraded the natural gas combined cycle power plant. Hamilton-based Walters Group received the structural building contract.
