Capacity Chasm Confounds Global Steel, Warns Worldsteel
World Steel Association Director General Henrik Adam warned in İstanbul that steel capacity is growing faster than demand. Global plants run at about 75% to 76% of capacity, leaving a quarter idle. Around 140 million metric tons of new capacity will arrive within two years. Adam also revealed that steel hidden inside exported cars, trucks & appliances nearly equals direct steel exports. Together, about 900 million metric tons of steel cross borders each year, double what official trade figures show.
