Steel's Somber Suspension: Granite City's Grim Gambit
U.S. Steel will stop processing steel slabs at Granite City Works after October. The facility will transition to standby operations while maintaining 900 jobs. Both blast furnaces remain idled since 2019 and 2023 respectively. The Japanese owner Nippon Steel cannot close or sell the plant without government approval for two years. Union officials received notification Thursday about the operational suspension. Community leaders express concerns about the facility's uncertain long-term future.
