Quality Quandary Quelled, QCO Quiescence Quoted

The Union Ministry of Steel has delayed its new Quality Control Order for finished steel imports by four months following concerns from small importers. The rule, announced on June 13, mandated BIS certification even for intermediate steel inputs. Industry bodies warned of potential financial losses of ₹150 crore on pre-ordered shipments. Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy explained the measure is vital to uphold quality and protect small businesses, while imports from BIS-certified plants will continue. The delay offers time for compliance without disrupting ongoing trade.
