Malaysia's Marginalised Mettle: Fair Trade's Fraught Frontier

Malaysia's steel industry federation is calling for fair trade treatment after the European Union's new safeguard quota regime, effective July 2026, allocated Malaysia an individual quota in only one of twenty-six product categories. A fifty percent out-of-quota tariff applies to excess shipments. Malaysia also faces a fifty percent US tariff and trade obstacles in Mexico. The federation argues that pandemic-era baseline data has distorted its quota allocation, and supports free trade negotiations with the European Union scheduled for conclusion in 2027.
