Newport's Nadir: Liberty Steel Lurches into Liquidation
Liberty Steel Newport, a hot rolled coil maker in South Wales, has gone into liquidation. Three liquidators were appointed on 13 October 2026. The move followed a winding-up petition from creditor Siemens Financial Services in July. The mill had not produced steel since early 2023, when Liberty turned it into a distribution hub, citing high energy costs & cheap imports. Creditors must file claims by 19 November. The collapse is the latest fallout from the 2021 failure of lender Greensill Capital, which cut off the group's main funding.
