Taranto's Tenuous Truce: Decree Delays Dormant Furnaces' Demise
Italy's government approved an emergency decree on 13 October to protect the Taranto steelworks run by Acciaierie d'Italia. The decree lets commissioners keep the blast furnaces hot so they are not damaged while production is stopped. Italy's Supreme Court is due to rule on the plant on 20 October. The government will also release a final loan payment of about €40 million. A ministry will gather proposals for new industries on the site beyond steel. Unions have called a 48-hour strike to demand clarity on jobs
