Subcontinent's Steel Saga: Surging Sufficiency & Shrinking

India's finished steel imports fell 34.1% year-on-year to 3.8 million metric tons during April-October 2025, according to provisional government data reviewed by Reuters. South Korea led exports to India shipping 1.4 million metric tons, followed by China, Japan & Russia. Despite being the world's second-largest crude steel producer, India remained a net importer as consumption at 92.2 million metric tons exceeded domestic finished steel production of 91.6 million metric tons. Indian steel exports surged 25.3% to 3.5 million metric tons, primarily targeting Italy, Belgium & Spain markets.
