Scrap’s Sagacious Salvation: India Mulls Mollifying Inspection Mandate
India is considering relaxing mandatory pre-shipment inspection certificate requirements for imported metal scrap. A government official confirmed the review on 22 September 2026. The recycling industry says the regime causes delays & port congestion. The Material Recycling Association of India estimates 2,500 scrap containers are handled daily. Overseas inspection costs about $200 per container. Shifting verification to domestic ports could save $500,000 daily in foreign exchange. The industry seeks an India-based, technology-driven inspection mechanism at designated ports.
