Europe's Epochal Edict: Erecting Equitable Steel's Enduring Edifice
The European Union's new steel trade measure took effect on July 1, 2026, replacing the old safeguard system with stronger import controls. The European Steel Association says the measure could restore up to fifteen million metric tons of lost European steel production. Around eighteen point three million metric tons of steel imports will still enter the European Union tariff-free each year. New traceability rules requiring mill test certificates will make it harder to disguise the true origin of imported steel.
