EU: Steel’s Scope Scrutinised, Safeguards Set for Stout Expansion

The European Commission has launched a consultation to expand the EU Steel Regulation's product scope, assessing whether cast iron tubes, wire products, and forged bars should be included. The regulation, effective 1 July 2026, slashed tariff‑free quotas by 47% to 18.3 million metric tons and doubled out‑of‑quota duties to 50%. Domestic steel prices have already risen significantly since implementation. The consultation runs until 28 September 2026, with a final decision expected by 31 December 2026.
