Pontedera's Plume: Lithium's Lurking Menace in the Scrapyard
A big fire broke out on the night of 26 October 2026 at Ecoacciai's scrap recycling plant in Pontedera, near Pisa in Italy. Thick smoke could be seen from far away, & several fire crews fought the blaze. Officials are checking for any harm to the environment & public health. The cause is not yet confirmed, but a lithium battery hidden in the scrap is suspected. Such battery fires are a growing problem for recyclers, & the industry body BIR is preparing training on how to handle them.
