China's Contentious Curtailment: Colossal Cuts in Steel
China slashed steel production to a two-year low in November 2025, producing only 69.87 million metric tons, down 10.9% year-on-year. The decline, marking the sixth consecutive monthly drop, resulted from coordinated provincial shutdowns aimed at reducing air pollution & meeting annual production targets. Pig iron output fell 8.7% to 62.34 million metric tons, while rolled steel decreased 2.6% to 115.91 million metric tons. For January-November, total steel production declined 4% to 891.67 million metric tons, signaling China's strategic pivot toward environmental compliance over production volume maximization.
