Canada: Steel Sovereignty: Saskatchewan Showcases Strategic Shift
Canada unveiled major steel industry protection measures on November 28, 2025, through Secretary of State Buckley Belanger's announcement in Regina. The government will slash tariff rate quotas for non-free trade agreement partners from 50% to 20% of 2024 levels & impose 25% tariffs on steel-derivative imports. Buy Canadian procurement policies will require federal contracts over $25 million to prioritize domestic materials. Railway freight rates for interprovincial steel transportation will drop 50% starting spring 2026, unlocking over $1 billion in new domestic demand whilst supporting workforce transitions.
