Protectionist Predicament: Packaging Producers Protest Punitive Policy
Brazil imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese tin-plated steel imports. The duties range from $284 to $499 per metric ton for five years. They target thin steel sheets used in food packaging like sardine cans. Brazil's Steel Packaging Association opposes the measures. They say the duties only benefit steel giant CSN's monopoly. The association warns that container costs will increase food prices. The measures affect steel less than 0.5mm thick from China. Brazilian authorities cited unfair Chinese pricing practices as justification.
