ArcelorMittal France's Appropriation: Assemblée's Audacious Action

France's National Assembly voted Thursday to nationalise ArcelorMittal France, the country's largest steelmaker employing 15,000 workers, responding to announced cost-cutting measures expected to eliminate approximately 270 positions. Far-left lawmakers championed the proposal as the sole mechanism for protecting employment, securing support from broader leftist coalitions despite government opposition. Economy Minister Lescure characterized the vote as "populist response to a structural problem," while Industry Minister Martin argued nationalisation "would weaken employment instead of protecting it." The Senate, dominated by centrist & centre-right groups, will almost certainly reject the proposal. Ministers emphasize steel industry challenges stem from Asian import competition, particularly China's one billion metric ton annual production, requiring European-level responses rather than unilateral French nationalisation.
