ArcelorMittal’s Arduous Aegis: Gijón’s Gallant Reactivation
ArcelorMittal restarted Blast Furnace A at its Gijón steelworks after a two-day outage. A burst water pipe caused a steam explosion on September ninth. No injuries occurred and damage was limited to structural elements. Blast Furnace B remained operational throughout. The company also plans to end primary steelmaking at Duisburg by end-2027, citing declining demand and high energy costs. A PricewaterhouseCoopers study suggests conventional steelmaking could become economically unviable in Europe by 2040 due to rising carbon costs.
