AISI Seeks Steel Shield in Trump–Xi Summit
AISI has asked President Donald Trump to raise Chinese steel overcapacity during his September 2026 meeting with Xi Jinping. The association cited projected global overcapacity of 745 million metric tons by 2028 & Chinese steel exports of 131 million metric tons in 2025. It seeks continued US steel tariffs & further action against structural excess capacity. AISI also raised concerns about Chinese automotive technologies & potential security risks. The requests represent an industry position, not a confirmed outcome of US–China negotiations.
