WTO's Weighty Wrangling & Steel's Safeguard Skirmishes
The World Trade Organization reviewed thirty-eight safeguard actions in April 2026, with steel and metal products making up nearly a third of all cases. The United States defended its steel tariffs as national security measures, but India challenged this view, arguing the measures fell under standard safeguard rules. Brazil and China also raised concerns about the impact on global trade, while the European Union, United Kingdom, and Egypt faced scrutiny over their own steel protection measures.
