A new climate organization, SteelWatch, is demanding the global steel industry stop investing in coal. Its first report calls for a ban on new or refurbished coal blast furnaces in developed countries immediately, and worldwide by 2028. The group warns that continuing with current plans will lock in massive carbon emissions for decades, blowing the global carbon budget. It urges a rapid switch to electric and hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies.
