Subterranean Specter Stalls SSAB's Steelmaking Sanctum in Luleå

SSAB's new steel mill construction site in Luleå, Sweden has been suspended since April 3, 2026, after around twenty subcontractor workers reported illness symptoms. Gas measurements found elevated nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide inside one excavation vehicle cabin, though ambient air levels remain within safe limits. Swedish authorities, including the Work Environment Authority and police, are investigating the incidents. SSAB states the stoppage has not materially affected the project's schedule or budget, and work will resume only when safety is confirmed.
