Slag's Sublime Second Life: SSAB & Heidelberg's Sagacious Symbiosis

SSAB and Heidelberg Materials announce a collaboration to develop electric arc furnace slag as a low-carbon cement binder. The initiative targets circular economy value creation by converting a steel industry by-product into a supplementary cementitious material that replaces clinker in cement production. Each metric ton of clinker replaced avoids up to zero point six metric tons of CO₂. The partnership addresses a growing global shortage of traditional clinker substitutes as blast furnace operations and coal power plants decline worldwide.
