Galati's Gloom: Liberty's Languishing Legacy & Failed Auction
Liberty Galati's auction attracted no buyers. The €720 million asking price proved too high for investors. High energy costs and expensive EU carbon permits also deterred bidders. Indian, Chinese, and Ukrainian firms, including JSW Steel and Metinvest, walked away. The plant's administrators now plan a second auction with a lower price, expected to be between €420 million and €500 million.
