European Aluminium and Poland's Grupa Kęty warn that new EU Emissions Trading System targets for 2026 to 2030 are too tough for the aluminium sector. The industry says benchmarks fail to reflect different processes like primary production, recycling, and rolling, which each have distinct decarbonization paths. Without reforms, the sector risks deindustrialization and carbon leakage, as production shifts to less regulated countries. Six EU member states have backed calls for more carbon allowances to protect energy-intensive industries.
