Eurofer, Shipbreaking Platform, and Recycling Europe are calling on the European Commission to ban beaching as a ship dismantlement method and remove Turkish yards from its approved recycling list. The Turkish shipbreaking sector at Aliağa is exempt from environmental permit and impact assessment requirements that other approved facilities must meet. The coalition says this creates an unfair competitive advantage and undermines the EU list's role as a global best-practice standard for the ship recycling industry.
