The current mechanism only applies to basic materials, leaving manufacturers exposed to cheaper imports from countries without carbon pricing. The European Commission is reviewing the mechanism's scope in 2026, and the coalition argues that expanding coverage could protect up to one hundred and eighty billion euros in annual European manufacturing output from unfair competition.
