EU’s Embrace Eases Ukraine’s CBAM Conundrum
Ukraine’s steel industry has reoriented 70% of its exports to the EU, but CBAM threatens that lifeline. The EU Delegation’s Nicola Sibona announced at a Kyiv conference that Brussels is adapting accreditation & verification procedures for wartime conditions. Ukraine lost 1.1 million metric tons of orders in Q1 2026 due to compliance hurdles. The EU also approved a new trade regime with a duty‑free cap of 18.3 million metric tons and 50% over‑quota tariffs. Procedural adaptation could restore export competitiveness while preserving CBAM’s integrity.
