EC: Stringent Safeguards & Steel's Seismic Structural Shift

The European Union confirms a sweeping new steel trade regime starting July 2026, setting annual import quotas at just over eighteen million metric tons, well below the twenty-eight-point-five million metric tons imported in 2025. The regime covers all non-European Union countries & introduces strict origin verification rules to prevent circumvention. Steel derivatives may be added to the scope after a June 2027 review, though industry groups warn the delay risks serious damage to European steel processors.
