Electra, a Boulder, Colorado startup, has developed a clean iron process that operates at just 60 degrees Celsius, using renewable electricity instead of coal. The technology refines low-grade iron ores into 99.9% pure iron with zero carbon dioxide emissions. Backed by over $271 million from investors including BHP, Nucor, Breakthrough Energy & the US Department of Energy, Electra's Colorado demonstration plant targets operations in mid-2026, producing around 500 metric tons of low-carbon iron annually.
