China's Capacious Crackdown: Curtailing Colossal Carbon Culprits
China's Ministry of Industry & Information Technology has issued a stricter capacity replacement policy for the steel sector, tightening the ratios that govern how much old capacity must be retired before new capacity can be built. The policy targets chronic overcapacity while accelerating the shift to electric arc furnace technology, which produces far less carbon dioxide than traditional blast furnaces. Enhanced enforcement mechanisms and greater transparency aim to close loopholes that weakened earlier reduction efforts.
