China & EU: Tempest’s Tariff Tangle & Trade’s Tectonic Tremors

Europe is raising a 50% tariff wall against steel imports on July 1, cutting the quota by nearly half. Beijing calls this protectionism, not competition. Behind the tariff lies the CBAM carbon tax, using emission default values that are twice China’s actual industrial emissions. Coupled with the IAA requiring local “green” steel for EU infrastructure, Chinese steel faces a three-front war. China is now negotiating hard with the WTO to prevent the collapse of billions in steel trade.
