Scunthorpe’s Staggering Subsidy & State’s Stewardship

The UK government spends £1.3 million daily to keep British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant operational. The National Audit Office reports £377 million spent over nine months. Costs projected to reach £615 million by June 2026. The government intervened last April after Jingye, the previous owner, faced £700,000 daily losses. The intervention preserved the UK’s last blast furnaces & thousands of jobs. Costs classified as loans without repayment terms.
