Agora Energiewende and the Wuppertal Institute publish a landmark study proving net-zero steel production is achievable by the early twenty-forties. The research identifies hydrogen-based direct reduced iron technology, coal phase-out, and international green iron trade as the key decarbonization drivers. The study warns that an additional one hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty million metric tons of direct reduced iron capacity is needed by twenty thirty. Governments and companies must act now to avoid carbon lock-in and stranded assets in the global steel sector.
